REVIEW: TINA – The Tina Turner Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre

REVIEW: TINA MUSICAL Milton Keynes Theatre - Jan 26

A powerful, electrifying night celebrating a true icon!

I recently had the pleasure of attending TINA – The Tina Turner Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre, and it was an absolutely thrilling experience from start to finish. This show is a celebration of strength, survival, and sensational music, packed with energy, emotion (lots of emotions), and unforgettable performances.

Written by acclaimed British playwright James Graham, the play explores leadership, identity and the weight of national expectation through one of England’s most emotionally charged institutions.

The set is bold and dynamic, effortlessly shifting between intimate moments and full-scale concert spectacle. The staging is slick and impactful, with striking lighting and clever transitions that really capture the scale of Tina Turner’s journey.

As soon as the show started, I was completely gripped. I didn’t know much about Tina’s life before watching the show. Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi, starring as Tina Turner, was simply outstanding. She delivers a powerhouse performance filled with passion, vulnerability, and sheer star quality. Her vocals are phenomenal! She completely embodies Tina’s spirit, strength, and resilience. An exceptional performance that held the audience spellbound.

The supporting cast bring depth and intensity to the story, helping to shape the emotional highs and lows of Tinas life. Together, they create a compelling narrative that never shies away from the tougher moments but always keeps her courage and determination at its heart.

A key part of the story is Tina’s relationship with Ike Turner played by David King-Yombo, who plays the role brilliantly and this is not an easy role to play. Given the nature of the character and part of Tinas life, this aspect of the musical is handled with honesty and sensitivity. Ike is portrayed as complex and deeply flawed, and his presence on stage adds a darker intensity that contrasts sharply with Tinas growing confidence and strength. The dynamic between Tina and Ike is uncomfortable at times, but powerfully performed, highlighting the control, manipulation, and emotional turmoil Tina endured, while never overshadowing her journey toward independence and self-belief.

Whether you’re a lifelong Tina Turner fan or simply looking for an inspiring, high-energy night out, TINA – The Tina Turner Musical is an unmissable experience. Powerful and utterly exhilarating, it’s a show that stays with you long after the final bow.
